The world championships in Richmond, Virginia, continued with the individual time trial for elite men. Four riders from Team Giant-Alpecin rode against the clock, representing the national colors of Germany, the United States, the Netherlands and Sweden, respectively. The 53km course included long straight roads and technical turns in the last few kilometers, before heading for the false-flat finishing climb of 680m.
Tom completed the 53km course with a time of 1:03:30 and an average pace of 50.1km/h, which was enough for 5th place.
After his race Tom said: “Yesterday I was still struggling with an injury. But I still set the fifth-fastest time, which gives me a feeling of satisfaction. As a professional athlete you always want more, but sometimes you have to accept that more isn’t possible.”
